SwimKam announced as key sponsor of prestigious event

Proudly supporting Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation Water Bike event

SwimKam, the ground-breaking first comprehensive anti-drowning solution on the market, is proud to announce its support of the prestigious Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation Water Bike event. Taking place at Sun City on Saturday, 16 September 2023, the event aims to raise funds to further the Foundation’s local initiatives to promote water safety education and drowning prevention.

Since its creation in December 2012, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation has focused on projects aimed at raising awareness of drowning prevention and teaching lifesaving to children and adults in all types of aquatic environments. To offer activities adapted to each environment, the Foundation relies on a network of local associations and national rescue societies. As a result, this year’s primary recipient the proceeds of the event is Lifesaving South Africa (LSA).

“Drowning is a major public health concern. According to the World Health Organisation, death or disability from drowning is the third biggest natural killer in the world. Drowning caused 2.5 million deaths over the last decade and is one of the main causes of death among children in many countries. In South Africa, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death, according to the South African Medical Journal, with approximately 600 children and 200 adults drowning every year,” says SwimKam CEO Colleen Glaeser.

“SwimKam was founded with the belief that these shocking numbers can – and should – be drastically reduced, and we are proud to be able to partner with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation to help raise funds to protect children from avoidable injuries and to prevent drowning. We believe this is the first of many initiatives where SwimKam and the Foundation will be able to collaborate to raise public awareness of water hazards, and ultimately, to save lives.”

She adds that the two organisations share a passion for nurturing a culture of water safety, each promoting the triptych of prevention – identify, alert, and intervene – in order to prevent drowning incidents. “LSA, as the authoritative body for lifeguarding and the promotion of lifesaving sport in South Africa, is a natural fit, and we are extremely pleased to be able to help this vital body extend its reach.”

Glaeser adds that every possible precaution to stop deaths or disabilities by drowning must be taken, and having only one layer of protection is simply not enough. If it were, then there wouldn’t be drownings.

“With spring around the corner, children are going to be getting excited about playing in the water. Unfortunately, we have seen that the traditional measures of keeping them safe around swimming pools are not good enough. That’s why a multi-layered approach to early detection, warning and prevention must be taken.”

This, she explains, is why SwimKam exists: To provide a complete anti-drowning solution, offering peace of mind, control, and immediate response for pool owners in the event of an incident. Using the latest technology, SwimKam delivers multiple layers of protection and warning detections, providing pool owners with a 360-degree view of the situation from their mobile device, allowing them to immediately trigger notifications to other users and emergency services if necessary. It can also detect underwater visuals in any clarity.

“The benefits of initiatives such as the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation Water Bike event cannot be underestimated. With the number of preventable deaths due to drowning remaining needlessly high, events such as this one provide a way to raise awareness and funds, leading to the kind of change we need to ensure our children can be safer in and around the water,” Glaeser concludes.

Avoid Swimming After Eating? https://swimkam.com/2022/07/29/are-you-really-supposed-to-avoid-swimming-after-eating/ Fri, 29 Jul 2022 19:38:54 +0000 https://swimkam.com/?p=818 Deprecated: Creation of dynamic property ET_Builder_Module_Helper_MultiViewOptions::$inherited_props is deprecated in /usr/www/users/swimkrdxka/wp-content/themes/Divi/includes/builder/module/helpers/MultiViewOptions.php on line 686 Deprecated: Creation of dynamic property ET_Builder_Module_Helper_MultiViewOptions::$inherited_props is deprecated in /usr/www/users/swimkrdxka/wp-content/themes/Divi/includes/builder/module/helpers/MultiViewOptions.php on line 686

With summer in full swing, you may spend a day at the lake or pool basking in the sun and taking the occasional dip to cool off. Yet when you were a kid, a full day at the pool meant living in the water from sun up to sun down, only getting out for a PB&J sandwich after your parents insisted. Then, like a dark cloud, the dreaded “wait 30 minutes” rule began. Now as a wise adult, you may be wondering if there’s any truth to waiting a specific amount of time after enjoying a quick bite and before dipping into the pool again.

With swimming being the fourth-most popular recreational hobby in the United States (per the CDC), it’s estimated that roughly 30% of Americans swim each year, while 36% of children swim as often as six times or more every year (via LIVESTRONG). It’s no surprise that rules around water safety have been around for years.

According to GoodRx Health, the time restrictions between eating and swimming came from three separate publications: a book around swimming safety in the early 1900s, a 1967 edition of a Boy Scouts handbook, and a 1967 volume of Outdoors USA Yearbook of Agriculture. While these publications had good intentions, science disagrees with their recommendations.

    You can eat after swimming

While certain states have unique rules around swimming, such as Maryland’s ban on eating in the ocean, Dr. Jim Keany, of Providence Mission Hospital in California, claims the general notion of waiting a certain amount of time to swim after eating is simply a myth, stating the idea is a misconception of what our bodies can and cannot do (via HuffPost). “There is no medical evidence that supports waiting at least 30 minutes after eating before swimming,” Keany says.

Dr. Keany explains that the idea came from a false assumption that the human body doesn’t have enough blood to aid in digestion and support the arms and legs for safe swimming, which simply isn’t true. There is enough blood in the body to support healthy digestion and safe swimming simultaneously.

However, after inhaling that burger and fries, you may want to be cautious of overexertion in the water. Triathlon coach John Rhodes suggests treating swimming like any other sport (per HuffPost). You wouldn’t eat a BLT with chips and then immediately play an hour of basketball in the hot sun. According to Duke Health, the biggest risk of eating before swimming is minor stomach cramps. Now that you’re safe to enjoy all your favorite summer recipes poolside, is there anything you should avoid before jumping into the water?

    Avoid alcohol before swimming

When people want a taste of summer, that usually means grilled food, fresh salads, and cold beer. But that beloved beverage is one treat that should be avoided if you’re planning to show off your diving board skills. According to the CDC, alcohol use is related to 70% of swimming deaths in America. A 2003 study in the Journal of Injury Prevention also suggests that if a person consumes alcohol, they are far more likely to drown or have a water-related accident. Dr. Jim Keany told HuffPost that when a person consumes too much alcohol, the human body also overheats, adding to the risks associated with safe swimming practices.

As long as you’re following recommended safety guidelines for swimming, you can feel confident while enjoying all your favorite foods near the lake or pool — you may, however, want to leave the summer cocktails at home.

Tips to Prevent Child Drownings https://swimkam.com/2022/07/29/tips-to-prevent-child-drownings/ Fri, 29 Jul 2022 19:31:22 +0000 https://swimkam.com/?p=811 Deprecated: Creation of dynamic property ET_Builder_Module_Helper_MultiViewOptions::$inherited_props is deprecated in /usr/www/users/swimkrdxka/wp-content/themes/Divi/includes/builder/module/helpers/MultiViewOptions.php on line 686 Deprecated: Creation of dynamic property ET_Builder_Module_Helper_MultiViewOptions::$inherited_props is deprecated in /usr/www/users/swimkrdxka/wp-content/themes/Divi/includes/builder/module/helpers/MultiViewOptions.php on line 686

    Tips to Prevent Child Drownings

Water games and pool activities can be fun for children, but it can also be dangerous when they’re left unattended.

Drowning is serious and poses a public health threat. According to Statistics South Africa, fatal drowning is the 5th leading cause of unintentional death in the country.

What happens to your body when you’re drowning?

Did you know that drowning can happen within 20 seconds?  When someone drowns, they experience extreme breathing difficulty because they are submerged in water/liquid and their airways are being blocked.

It’s common to panic as you try and hold your breath while struggling to stay above water. Once you begin to swallow water/liquid, your reflux responses will be triggered which causes you to cough.

With a lack of oxygen being delivered to the brain, it can take a few minutes before severe damage occurs.

    “Dry” drowning and secondary drowning

Dry drowning happens when a child inhales in water through the nose or mouth, causing the vocal cords to go into a spasm. The drowning is called “dry” because water doesn’t reach the lungs. This type of drowning becomes fatal because the vocal cords don’t relax and airways are blocked which makes it difficult to breathe.

Secondary or “delayed” drowning happens when water enters the lungs, causing inflammation or swelling. The swelling can occur hours or even days after the initial incident. Death from delayed drowning is due to swelling of the small air sacs in the lungs, preventing oxygen from entering the bloodstream.

    Signs of a possible drowning

A drowning child may not be able to call for help, so it’s best to be aware of the signs:

    • The child is floating with their face down in the water.
    • The child’s head is tilted back and their mouth is open.
    • The child is gasping for air.
    • The child is trying to swim in a particular direction and isn’t making any progress.

    How to prevent drowning

To keep your children safe in and near the water, follow these guidelines:

    • Always make sure that your child is being supervised by a responsible adult while swimming or playing with or around water.
    • Teach your kids to swim. Enroll children in age-appropriate swim lessons to help protect them from drowning.
    • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and rescue techniques. Your CPR skills could save someone’s life.
    • Medical conditions such as epilepsy increase your risk of drowning. If you or your child has epilepsy or experiences seizures make sure that they’re always being supervised.
    • Always be prepared and know what to do in case of an emergency. Save all emergency numbers on your cell-phone or nearby for easy access.

    Learn CPR and rescue techniques

Although drowning can be fatal, your child can survive if they get help immediately.

Knowing how to administer CPR to a child or infant who is drowning could mean the difference between life and death. If the child’s heart has stopped for 8 to 10 minutes, the chance of survival is slim.

Don’t risk your own life and safety when trying to rescue the child. Rather use a flotation device like a life jacket or noodle. Once the child is safely out the water you can begin to administer CPR.

This involves a combination of chest compressions known as hands-only CPR.

The following CPR procedure is for children between the age of 12 months and 8 years old.

    1. Chest compressions:
Lay the child down on a flat, firm surface. Place the heel of your hand over the lower third area of their breastbone and give the child 30 quick chest compressions. Press hard enough so that the chest moves down 5 centimetres. This will help get the blood flowing to the vital organs and the brain.
    2. Push hard, push fast:
      For children:
Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest, then place the heel of the other hand on top of the first hand, and lace your fingers together. Deliver 30 quick compressions that are each about 4cm deep.
For infants: Use 2 fingers to deliver 30 quick compressions that are each about 4cm deep.
    3. Keep going:
Repeat the 30 compressions till the child is able to breathe or the ambulance arrives.

    Tips on swimming pool safety

The Tshwane Emergency Services would like to urge residents to be responsible and ensure that pools are safe for small children and persons that cannot swim during the merriment period that is upon us.

With the festive season already underway and schools having closed, children tend to swim more on the hot summer days. The Tshwane Emergency Services has in the previous month alone, responded to three incidents of children who have fallen into swimming pools, with one incident being fatal. In the time it takes to pour a drink, a child can drown

Below are the tips that every parent and pool owner should take note of:

    • Never leave a child unattended near any source of water, even a bath tub, fish pond and water bucket.
    • If you have a pool or water feature, get a safety cover fitted by a reputable supplier. Don’t secure a pool but ignore a pond or fountain! Check the cover fasteners regularly and replace them as soon as they weather or break – they are crucial to the effectiveness of such covers.
    • If your children visit friends whose pools are not secure, urge the parents to fit a safety pool cover.
    • Check the weight tolerance of any safety cover you purchase.
    • Make sure that your pool is fenced and fitted with a self-closing and self-latching gate that opens to the outside of the pool. The latch should be out of reach of children.
    • A swimming pool fence is not a substitute for supervision – close the pool completely.
    • Don’t leave toys in or right next to a pool – children will be tempted to retrieve them.
    • Display a safety chart with emergency numbers on your pool fence.
    • Keep your cell phone or cordless phone near the pool so that you can call 10177 in an emergency.
    • Ensure that every adult in the home knows how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including domestic workers.
    • As soon as a child is found in a pool, start CPR and do not stop before emergency services arrive on the scene. It can make the difference between a full recovery, brain damage and death.
    • Discourage walking or playing on any pool cover. Fit a sensor beam if your children tend to flout the rules.
    • If your child has suddenly gone quiet or wandered off, check the pool first. Even a minute can make the difference between survival, irreversible brain damage and death.
    • Empty baths, basins and nappy buckets immediately after use.
    • Never leave the pool area unattended even for a moment; take the children with you if you do.
    • It is a good idea to learn how to swim and teach the children to swim. However, a child who knows how to swim is not out of danger. He or she stills needs supervision at all times.

When emergencies occur, call Emergency Services immediately on 10177 or 012 310 6300/6400.
